Chapter 21: Movements

Denise and Jacinta sat in a small coffee shop, finishing their drinks in silence. She had given Jacinta details on the appearance of Shane Ryan after having only texted her the barest information when he had first arrived in the hospital.

Denise rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands and yawned. Their potential witness to the shooting had died of cardiac arrest, despite the doctors’ best efforts to save him. She was tired. It was Sunday, and all she wanted to do was sleep.

“Do you think he knows who killed the Finches?” Jacinta asked.

“Yeah,” Denise yawned. “Or, he has a good idea.”

“We going to watch him?”

“I’d like to,” Denise responded. “I don’t know that we can. Not without the captain’s blessing. Shane’s not a suspect, and he hasn’t committed any crimes here in Detroit. Doesn’t have any outstanding warrants. Not even any parking tickets. I think we’ll have to check up on Shane, but it’ll have to be on off-hours.”

“Think he’s really going to get the whiskey?” Jacinta asked in a teasing tone.

“What?” Denise laughed. “Why in the hell does that matter?”

“I don’t know. Maybe with a few drinks into him, and with one or both of us being, well, social, we could get him to talk.”

“You can try if you want,” Denise responded. “I’ve got a boyfriend, remember?”

“He might not be that bad on the eyes after, say, a fifth or two.”

They both snickered at the thought, and Denise grinned at her partner. “You’re bad, Jacinta.”

“The absolute worst. It’s why everyone loves me.”

Denise snorted. “You think a lot about yourself.”

“I’m just speaking the truth. So, how do you want to work this?”

“I think one of us should see him tomorrow, maybe around six, if you can do it.”

“Sure,” Jacinta replied. “I can do it. You have anything planned with Kid Finance?”

Denise rolled her eyes at the nickname Jacinta had for Greg. “Yes, Greg and I are having dinner tomorrow.”

“Okay, six it is.” Jacinta pushed the bill toward Denise. “Your turn.”

Denise flipped her off, picked up the bill, and headed to the cash register.
